Snow Day Fun

Need some snow day fun? There is a Pattern Block applet in Geometry (6-8) of the Virtual Manipulatives web site, as Marc pointed this out in his blog. You could make a cool design. If you wanted, you could limit it only to certain pieces, such as tan, orange, blue and green, etc.

Another question about the Pattern Blocks. Since the tan and orange are their own category of pieces, can you find a relationship between them? What is the ratio in the area of tan to orange? How can you convince me?

  1. Professor Flint,

This seems like an excellent activity to use with seventh or eighth children. It forces them to form ratios and calculate area. In addition, students are expected to think deeply about the problem when they are asked to create a convincing argument.
